Charity Spotlight: Mums In Need
In our ongoing efforts to help charitable organisations reach more people, we are brining you another Spotlight blog, focusing on a cause we think deserves to be heard about.
This week we want to highlight Mums In Need (MIN), the brilliant work they do, and their current fundraiser.
The small, mainly volunteer-run charity is a unique support service based in Sheffield for mothers suffering ongoing coercive control after separation from an abusive partner and has helped over 200 women.
Despite changes in legislation that recognise coercive control as a diverse range of control strategies, MIN recognises that what goes on beyond physical violence is mainly unseen by other services.
“Domestic abuse is always underpinned by intimate terrorism, the emotional and psychological elements of control that shatter lives. Violent assault is just one piece of the jigsaw that makes up the complex patterns of abuse; the tip of the iceberg.”
Many mothers are left struggling to find the understanding and resources to cope with ongoing, invisible abuse. This can be an incredibly lonely and desperate situation, impacting work-life, other relationships, motherhood, health and commonly causing anxiety and depression.
MIN offers a tailored service to women, providing them with a community of fellow survivors, experienced professionals and support to rebuild their lives. The support they offer ranges from counselling, legal support, financial advice, self-esteem and stress management workshops, peer support groups as well as yoga and well-being sessions.
They currently need to raise £18,630 to appoint a Team Lead/Operations Manager to support their amazing staff and volunteers, and run MIN’s day-to-day operations. They are also committed to appointing a Finance Lead and a Media & Marketing Team Lead to drive those areas of the charity.
If you’re in a position to help, we urge you to read more about MIN and check out their fundraising page.
