Training and Employment Schemes fro Businesses

Did you know there is a range of government programmes available to employers who are considering hiring employees, offering work experience or upskilling existing staff?

Some even offer financial incentives too!

We’ve broken them down, with links to find out more information on each of the schemes.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprenticeships are paid employment for over 16s that combines work and studying into a job that will develop your workforce and business.

What will it cost my business?

You are legally required to pay an Apprentice Minimum Wage, which is currently £4.81 an hour, as well as a 5% training contribution depending on the size of your business.

How will it benefit my business?

It gives you an opportunity to develop a motivated, skilling and qualified workforce with knowledge of your business. 

How long will it take?

Apprenticeships would be a minimum of 12 months.

T LEVELS: INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS

T Levels are shorter industry placements for 16-19 year olders which are 45 days (315 hours).

What will it cost my business?

This is a FREE government scheme, but bear in mind that you might have your own business costs associated with taking on a temporary placement student.

How will it benefit my business?

It gives you early access to the brightest young people entering the market and the opportunity to scout and develop future talent in your area, with little to no costs. 

How long will it take?

This is a short term placement lasting 45 days.

SECTOR-BASED WORK ACADEMY PROGRAMME (SWAP)

A short placement for benefit claimants age 18+, designed to help you recruit a workforce with the right skills to sustain and grow your business.

What will it cost my business?

This is a FREE government scheme, but bear in mind that you might have your own business costs associated with taking on a temporary placement student.

How will it benefit my business?

SWAP helps you recruit or train staff through fully funded pre-employment training. 

How long will it take?

The Work Academy Programme lasts for up to 6 weeks.

SKILLS BOOTCAMPS

These bootcamps are flexible training courses for 19+ to fast-track specialist skill development for existing or new talent in your business.

What will it cost my business?

The cost will vary depending on the size of your business, but there will be no cost to the employer if the learner is not a current employee.

How will it benefit my business?

A new starter will be trained in a specialist skill that is specific to your business. A guaranteed interview after the training bootcamp motivates applicants to focus and learn.

Skills Bootcamps can take up to 16 weeks.

TRAINEESHIPS

Skills development programmes that include an unpaid work placement to help 16-24 year olds to prepare for an apprenticeship or employment.

What will it cost my business?

This is a FREE government scheme, but bear in mind that you might have your own business costs associated with taking on a temporary placement student.

How will it benefit my business?

Traineeships provide a stepping stone for your future apprentices or employees to gain valuable skills relevant to your business.  

How long will it take?

Traineeships can last from 6 weeks to 12 months, or 70-240 hours.

SUPPORTED INTERNSHIPS FOR LEARNERS WITH AN EDUCATION, HEALTH AND CARE PLAN

Unpaid work placements for 16-24 year olds with additional needs, including Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND), who are supported by a qualified job coach.

What will it cost my business?

This is a FREE government scheme, but bear in mind that you might have your own business costs associated with taking on a temporary placement student.

How will it benefit my business?

Taking on a Supported Intern will increase your confidence and ability as an employee to employ individuals with additional needs, expanding and improving your business’ recruitment prospects.  

How long will it take?

Placements can last from 6-12 months.

CARE-LEAVER COVENANT

Help a 16-25 year old who was in local authority care to become independent through practical job-related support, in a way that will suit your business.

What will it cost my business?

This is a FREE government scheme, but bear in mind that you might have your own business costs related to the practical offer you make to care leavers.

How will it benefit my business?

By helping care-leavers to move to independent living you will be enabling them to enrich your business with their life skills and experiences.

How long will it take?

The length of time for a Care-Leaver Covenant can vary depending on what offer your business has available.

EMPLOYING PRISONERS AND PRISON LEAVERS

Employ prisoners and prison leavers aged 18+.

What will it cost my business?

This is a FREE government scheme, but bear in mind that you might have your own business costs associated.

How will it benefit my business?

Employing a prisoner or prison leaver will help your business to fill skills gaps, whilst also developing a loyal and talented workforce who are motivated to grow through work. 

How long will it take?

Employment can vary depending on the employer and prisoner/prison leaver.

FREE COURSES AND ADDITIONAL TRAINING FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES

There are also additional ways to train up your existing employees through free qualifications such as HTQs, or basic skills in English, Maths and Digital, as well as career advice and financial support.

What will it cost my business?

Courses are fully funded for eligible adults, but employees may need time to study and attend classes which should be taken into account.

How will it benefit my business?

Allowing your employees to access additional training and support can help to improve productivity, whilst developing loyal and talented workers in a rapidly changing labour market.  

How long will it take?

The length of time can vary depending on what support/training your employee requires.
