6 Reasons An Apprentice Will Benefit Your Business

Whilst businesses have been encouraged to take on apprentices for years now, there has been a recent increase in incentives from the government, such as opening applications for companies to become Flexi-Job Apprentice Agencies.

In a survey the government carried out in 2020, they found that 74% of employers believed apprenticeships had helped them improve the quality of their product/service and business.

If you’re wondering whether hiring an apprentice is the right fit for your business or why you should bother, then these 6 reasons might help you make a better informed decision.

1. A Fresh Perspective

Apprentices are typically young or have limited experience in their chosen field, meaning they will not have been moulded to certain ways of thinking and working. This mindset can be greatly utilised within a business to bring a completely fresh and outside perspective to projects.

2. Train For The Staff You Need

As you will be training your apprentice from the very beginning, it is a great way to develop their skills in areas your business might be lacking staff. You can help train up your apprentice to be the best fit for the employee you require.

3. They’re Cheaper

One of the first benefits we’re sure you thought of is the lower wage you’re required to pay an apprentice. All apprentices are entitled to earn the National Minimum Wage at the appropriate rate for an apprentice, and this rate is lower in the first year or if they’re under 19. This makes for a great opportunity to hire new talent for businesses that can’t quite stretch to a full time employee at the moment, but might be looking to in the next few years.

4. You Might Not Have To Pay A Thing

If you have fewer than 50 employees and your  apprentice is age 16-18, 19-24 and has previously been in care or has a Local Authority Education, Health and Care plan, then you might not have to pay anything towards your apprentice. The government will cover 100% of the apprenticeship costs.

5. Invaluable Experiences & Skills

If you take on an older apprentice, they might have a host of transferable skills and experiences that will greatly benefit your business in ways you wouldn’t have previously imagined. Equally, a younger apprentice might have greater technological skills and a keen desire to learn.

6. Increased Productivity

The Government also found that 78% of employees saw their productivity levels increase after hiring and training an apprentice. Their eagerness and enthusiasm to learn can be instrumental in increasing your productivity levels and encouraging your existing staff to get reinvigorated.
